Alec Baldwin, 63, has taken to Twitter to speak out on the tragic accident that led to the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins for the first time. It comes after the actor accidentally shot and killed the crewmember on the set of his film Rust yesterday.

He penned in view of his one million Twitter followers: “There are no words to convey my shock and sadness regarding the tragic accident that took the life of Halyna Hutchins, a wife, mother and deeply admired colleague of ours.

“I’m fully cooperating with the police investigation to address how this tragedy occurred and I am in touch with her husband, offering my support to him and his family.

“My heart is broken for her husband, their son, and all who knew and loved Halyna.”

Halyna, 42, was killed when Alec fired a prop gun on the set of his new film.

The cinematographer was taken to hospital but pronounced dead from stomach gunshot wounds.

The film’s director Joel Souza, 48, was also rushed to hospital after being injured in the accident.

However, one of the film’s stars, Frances Fisher, has confirmed he has been discharged.

Police were called to Bonanza Creek Ranch yesterday at 1.50pm local time (7.50pm GMT).

A Santa Fe sheriff spokesman issued a statement to AFP news agency, confirming Alec had spoken to detectives about the incident.

They said: “He came in voluntarily and he left the building after he finished his interviews.”

According to Showbiz 411, Alec could be heard shouting “why was I handed a hot gun?” after the shocking incident.

A “hot gun” is used to describe a weapon that contains live ammunition.

“In all my years, I’ve never been handed a hot gun,” the 30 Rock actor reportedly said.

Baldwin was pictured standing outside the sheriff’s office after questioning.

The visibly devastated actor was seen speaking on his phone while crying.

At another point, Alec was pictured doubled over with grief while breaking down in tears.

Production on the star’s movie Rust, which co-stars Jensen Ackles, has been shut down indefinitely.

Producers of the film have also offered cast and crew members counselling in the aftermath of the horrific incident.

A spokesperson for Baldwin previously said the shooting involved “the misfire of a prop gun with blanks.”

Hutchins was named “rising star” by American Cinematographer magazine in 2019 and was an American Film Institute (AFI) graduate.
