When Drew Barrymore's grandfather — actor John Barrymore — passed away in 1942, his famous friends took his corpse out for one final hurrah, and the 45-year-old actress wants her pals to do the same.
During an appearance on the YouTube show Hot Ones, Barrymore confirmed rumors that her grandpa's body was stolen from the morgue by W.C. Fields, Errol Flynn, and Sadakichi Hartmann so that they could throw one last party with him in attendance, propping his cadaver against a poker table.
"Not only yes, but there have been cinematic interpretations of that," she replied to host Sean Evans's question. "A Blake Edwards film called S.O.B. that’s just brilliant and fun to watch." As for her grandfather being the inspiration for Weekend At Bernie's, Barrymore said, "I've heard things, but I can't know ever if that's even true."
She added, "I hope my friends do the same for me. That is the kind of spirit I can get behind. Just prop the old bag up and have a last few rounds." Providing an explanation for her morbid wish, Barrymore said: “I think death comes with so much morose sadness and I understand that, but if it’s okay, just for me, if everybody could be really happy and celebratory and have a party, that would be my preference.”
Cameron Diaz, Reese Witherspoon, and Gwyneth Paltrow — Drew's counting on you.
