Fern Britton, 64, has discussed starting afresh and moving forward with her life. The former This Morning presenter, who tied the knot with her second husband Phil Vickery two decades ago, announced the news of their split in September.

The long-standing TV veteran explained that it’s “nice” to now have the freedom to make decisions on her own.

Fern said being in a relationship was a “double-edged sword” because you had someone to discuss options with, but that is now no longer the case.

She went on to reiterate that she isn’t lonely and is spending much of her time exploring different avenues.

Addressing her split in a candid interview, Fern opened up about life as a single woman.

“Being wholly in charge of a situation and not having someone to discuss it with is a double-edged sword,” she explained.

“I can say, ‘Let’s blow up the house and build something else,’ and I don’t have to justify it, which is great.”

She continued to Good Housekeeping magazine: “But it’s also a big decision – and I have to arrange everything myself!

“I’m not lonely but I’m in this transition period where I’m working out what’s next for me.

“My approach has always been, head down, keep going, and for the first time in my life, I’m thinking, ‘Hang on, where shall I go now?’ – and that’s quite nice.”

“Suddenly, the world is my oyster,” she finished.

Fern and Phil were married 20 years after they tied the knot in 2000.

At the time of their separation, Fern wrote in a statement shared on Twitter: “After more than 20 happy years together, Phil and I have decided to go our separate ways.

“We will always share a great friendship and our lovely children.

“We would appreciate it if our privacy is respected at this time. Thank you for your continued kindness and support.”

The former couple share 19-year-old daughter Winnie.

Fern is also a mother to twin sons Harry and Jack, 26, and daughter Grace, 23, from her first marriage to Clive Jones.

Elsewhere, the accomplished author has returned to screens for a two-part series special.
