Gemma Atkinson, 35, has discussed the anxiety of something happening to her or partner Gorka Marquez after her dad died suddenly when she was 17. The admission comes as Gorka films for Strictly Come Dancing away from his family and the actress admitted he is “missing” their daughter.

That’s a worry

Gemma revealed that it would be difficult to film a job abroad as she does not want to be absent from daughter Mia, 1, incase anything were to happen to her.

She said: “That’s a worry because I lost my dad so young. I was only 17.

“It sounds silly but if I was to do a job where I had to fly somewhere, I’d be thinking: ‘Oh my God, I don’t want to get on the plane without Mia’. That makes me feel vulnerable,” she added.

Gemma’s father David died suddenly from heart disease at the age of 52 and it is a wound that is still painful for the actress to re-open now.

During lockdown, Gemma and Gorka spent five months together at home after he finished performing his Here Come The Boys show.

The actress was worried about being able to cope at home without him, as he left again recently to begin working on the new series of Strictly Come Dancing.

However, she has now realised that she is able to be independent and “do stuff on her own” during their time apart.

She continued: “It was lovely to have the help, but it’s also made me realise I can do stuff on my own.

“I feel bad now for him that he’s having to be away. He’s missing Mia so badly.”

The star added that being apart has also kept the “honeymoon period alive” as they look forward to reuniting.

“We miss each other so much but when we’re not together that strengthens us.

“It’s helped keep the [honeymoon period] alive because it keeps us on our toes,” she explained to The Sun.

It comes as the actress filmed for Steph McGovern’s newly launched talk show Steph’s Packed Lunch last week, that airs daily on Channel 4.

Gemma is now a co-host on the programme and recently Steph surprised her with a touching message from her beau.

Steph said: “Gemma we’ve got a bit of a surprise for you actually.”

“I’m worried now,” Gemma replied.

Steph reassured her: “No, this is actually a lovely thing because Gorka is working, he’s doing Strictly so he sent a little message for you.”

“No he’s not, has he?” a shocked Gemma replied.

Gemma was overcome with emotion as Gorka appeared on the screen with a heartfelt speech for her.

Gorka said: “Hello baby, I hope you’re having a great show. I just want to surprise you and say I’m so proud of you and everything you do.”
