Here’s Everyone Taylor Swift Ever Wrote A Song About

There’s no denying that Taylor Swift is one of the great songwriters of our time. With 11 Grammy wins and 41 nominations, she has the accolades to prove it (via The Grammys). Swift even won the award for Album of the Year at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards in 2021 for her album “folklore.”

It wasn’t even the only album Swift released in 2020. The “cardigan” singer dropped a sister album to “folklore” titled “evermore” in December (via USA Today). During a pandemic and global lockdown, Swift really used her time to do what she does best — make music. And what made “folklore” so different from Swift’s earlier albums is that it was written from different characters’ points of view (via Time). Usually, Swift writes from personal experience, but “folklore” really blurred the lines “between truth and fiction.” It was a change of pace for fans who usually work hard to unpack the lyrics in each one of Swift’s songs to determine who they were written about. After all, it is kind of fun to do some sleuthing to figure out which Taylor Swift songs are about whom.

Taylor Swift wrote many songs about Joe Jonas

Among the people that it’s been rumored that Swift has written about is her ex-boyfriend Joe Jonas. Swift just released a re-recording of her 2008 album “Fearless” along with some songs from the vault. One of which was “Mr. Perfectly Fine,” which is rumored to be about Jonas. Another song that made it on the original “Fearless” album was “Forever & Always.” According to Billboard, that song is rumored to be about Jonas who broke up with Swift.

At the time, the split happened so close to the release of “Fearless” that it didn’t give Swift enough time to include more songs on the albumHowever, she had plenty of time to include some on her next album, “Speak Now.” Songs like “Last Kiss” and “Better Than Revenge” are rumored to be about Jonas and the latter is supposedly about actress Camilla Belle who Jonas dated after her (via PopSugar). On “Red,” the song “Holy Ground” is rumored to be about Jonas as well, and references when they performed together at Madison Square Garden.

Even on “folklore,” there is a line in the song “invisible string” that says “cold was the steel of my axe to grind for the boys who broke my heart, now I buy their babies presents.” Swift said she wrote the song after she “sent an ex a baby gift,” and fans suspected it was Jonas who just welcome his first child with wife, Sophie Turner (via Celebrity Nine).

Swift's 'Red' album is rumored to be inspired by her relationship with Jake Gyllenhaal

Despite having breakup songs on almost all of her albums, Swift has said “Red” is the only true breakup album she has written, according to Elle. Swift was linked to actor Jake Gyllenhaal in 2010, but according to Us Magazine, it was a short-lived romance. Swift was “really upset and hurt” by the breakup, and used that to write songs like “All Too Well” and “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.”

Other than a few songs like “Holy Ground” and “Starlight” — which are rumored to be about Joe Jonas and Connor Kennedy respectively — the entire “Red” album is supposedly about the “Spider-Man: Far From Home” actor. That includes songs like “Red,” “I Knew You Were Trouble,” and “State of Grace.” There’s even a bonus track off of Swift’s deluxe “Red” album, “The Moment I Knew,” which references her “worst experience ever” when Gyllenhaal didn’t show up at her 21st birthday party, according to Showbiz Cheat Sheet. Skipping out on your birthday party is definitely grounds for “never ever, ever getting back together.”

Taylor Swift has written many songs about her feud with Kanye West

Not every person Swift has written about is an ex. In fact, there are a lot of songs rumored to be written about Kanye West. Swift and West haven’t always had the best relationship. It started with West’s infamous “I’mma let you finish” moment where he interrupted Swift on stage after she won the VMA for Best Female Video for “You Belong With Me” (via Billboard). One year after the incident, Swift debuted her song “Innocent” off her “Speak Now” album that was a response to West’s behavior.

Of course, that wasn’t the end of their story. The two seemed to make up afterwards, but quickly were enemies once again in 2016 after West released a song with the lyric “I made that bitch famous.” That started an ongoing feud between the two, and even caused Swift to take a break while writing her sixth album, “reputation.” When she released her first single off the album, “Look What You Made Me Do,” it was obvious that the song was about West and Kim Kardashian (via Showbiz Cheat Sheet). Other songs off the album rumored to be about West are “This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things” and “I Did Something Bad.” Then, on her next album, “Lover,” Swift admitted that she had finally moved on from the drama with her song “I Forgot That You Existed” (via Buzzfeed).

Taylor Swift has found true love with Joe Alwyn

Taylor Swift has written about love stories for years, but it seems she’s finally found her prince charming with actor Joe Alwyn. The two met in 2016 at the Met Gala when Swift was still dating DJ Calvin Harris, according to Parade. It’s rumored that Swift wrote her song “Dress” off of the album “reputation” about that first meeting. Other songs on “reputation” that are supposed to be about “The Favourite” actor are “Delicate,” “Gorgeous,” and “King of My Heart” (via Capital FM).

Swift’s next album “Lover” really reflects the love she feels, and you can hear it in songs like “Lover,” “The Archer,” and even “London Boy,” which references Alwyn’s hometown. While her eighth album “folklore” has more fictional storylines, there are also real-life references to Swift and Alwyn’s relationship. The actor even helped to produce the album, which earned him a Grammy as well (via Billboard). One song in particular that seems to be about Alwyn is “invisible string,” which mentions a three-year anniversary trip that the two took together (via Us Weekly). There are even songs in “evermore” about Alwyn, like “willow” where Swift sings “I’m begging for you to take my hand/Wreck my plans/That’s my man.”

While Swift has written songs about other past boyfriends, like Harry Styles on “1989,” and her family and friends, some of the biggest songs of her career have been about Jonas, Gyllenhaal, West, and Alwyn. Hopefully for Alwyn, there’s more to come.
