Lady Gaga’s dog walker Ryan Fischer is opening up about his harrowing road to recovery, just over a month after getting shot while walking the pop star’s dogs.
In a lengthy Instagram post Monday, Fischer shared that, after returning home from the hospital to “start a path to healing,” he discovered a “strange hissing and glugging” from his chest every time he took a breath.
As a result, he was readmitted to the hospital a week after getting discharged.
“A doctor visit and x-ray followed, and soon after I was whisked to the same ER where I had been only a week earlier: my lung had collapsed, and air was filling up my chest cavity,” he wrote.
Fischer continued to describe how his lung collapsed multiple times during his second stay at the hospital.
“It became quite clear that my lung was not healing, and the bullet wound had scarred my tissue like a burn,” he wrote. “It could take months, if ever, for the hole to seal.”

Fischer said he eventually had portions of his lung removed and that he’s now out of the hospital and working through the trauma of his experiences.
“The journey is hard, it’s assuredly painful,” he wrote. “But I try. And somewhere within that I find the absurdity and wonder and beauty this life offers us all.”
Along with the caption, Fischer shared a video of himself taking off his hospital gown and getting dressed, while Carly Simon’s “Coming Around Again” plays in the background.
On the evening of Feb. 24, Fischer was walking three of the pop star’s dogs in Los Angeles, when two men approached him in a four-door sedan, according to Los Angeles Police Department’s Officer Drake Madison. Surveillance video from a neighboring house showed Fischer repeatedly yelling for help as he tried to fight off the suspects. The struggle escalated before one suspect wielding a semiautomatic handgun shot him.
The men stole two of Gaga’s French bulldogs, Gustav and Koji. Two days later, the animals were recovered unharmed, after a woman who appeared to be “uninvolved and unassociated” with the armed robbery returned them to the LAPD’s Olympic Community Police Station, Los Angeles Police Capt. Jonathan Tippett said.

In a March 1 Instagram post, Fischer described his “very close call with death,” saying he found comfort in his “guardian angel,” Gaga’s third dog, Asia, who escaped the dognapping.
“4 days ago, while a car sped away and blood poured from my gun shot wound, an angel trotted over and laid next to me. My panicked screams calmed as I looked at (Asia), even though it registered that the blood pooling around her tiny body was my own,” he wrote, alongside a photo of himself in the hospital.
Fischer said he cradled the dog, “thanked her for all the incredible adventures we’d been on together” and “apologized that I couldn’t defend” Koji and Gustav.
