Mountain Guitarist Leslie West Dead At 75

Leslie West, the guitarist and co-vocalist of hard-rock band Mountain, died Wednesday morning at the age of 75.

West suffered cardiac arrest at his home near Daytona, Florida, on Monday, December 21, and never regained consciousness.

West’s brother, Larry West Weinstein, announced the news in a Facebook post, which read, “I am asking for all your prayers. Jenni is by his side in Florida but it’s not looking good. Thanks Jenni, he wouldn’t have made it this far without you. His heart gave out and he’s on a ventilator. May not make it through the night.”

West started his musical career in a band called The Vagrants before breaking off with producer Felix Pappalardi. Together, they formed a new group called Mountain, taking the name from West’s recent Pappalardi-produced solo album.

Mountain’s real debut album Climbing! was released in 1970. The opening track “Mississippi Queen” is their most popular song. The band’s lineup consisted of West, Pappalardi, drummer Corky Laing, and keyboardist Steve Knight.
