Oti Mabuse left shaking as she talks loved one’s death and online funeral in TV interview

Oti Mabuse opens up about friend’s loss to coronavirus

Strictly Come Dancing professional Oti Mabuse, 30, was left shaking as she shared details about a loved one she has lost due to coronavirus. The dancer said she had to watch her best friend’s mum’s funeral in Africa via YouTube and explained how her pal couldn’t attend because he is stuck in America and couldn’t travel back home.

“When you lose someone, it becomes real,” she began.

“My best friend, closest to my heart, he lost his mum over Christmas. We couldn’t go back to South Africa because their borders are closed and he couldn’t leave America.

“He’s alone, no friends, no family. He went there for work and the only way I could be there for him, was to actually call him.

“What was worse is, we had to then attend her funeral and because we can’t travel, that had to be over YouTube.

“Now YouTube is a place we go to have fun, to learn, to dance, never in a million years do you think you have to say goodbye to your mum, the queen of your heart…”

Struggling to finish her sentence, Oti paused as she told Steph: “[This] makes me emotional.”

“Over YouTube,” she continued.

The dancer went on to say: “He didn’t have a way to pay his respects, he can’t say anything, so he was by himself in a completely different continent and it just made it real.

“A lot of the time you hear people get it and they’re fine and they get through it, but when it hits home and it’s someone you know it’s tough, it becomes real and it’s hard.

“It doesn’t give you time to say goodbye, you can’t see them.”

Pausing again as she shared her emotional story on The Steph Show, she added: “I’m shaking.”

“It hurts, that’s the thing because you don’t expect it to be that quick,” Oti concluded.

The Strictly star shared her story following the news that coronavirus-related deaths in the UK reached 100,000 this week.

In the Prime Minister’s speech on Tuesday, he apologised to those who have lost their loved ones due to coronavirus and said the Government did “everything it could” to prevent this.

Addressing the 100,000 coronavirus-related deaths, he said: “I think on this day I should just really repeat that I am deeply sorry for every life that has been lost.

“Of course, as I was Prime Mnister I take full responsibility for everything that the government has done.”

“What I can tell you is that we truly did everything we could, and continue to do everything that we can, to minimise loss of life and to minimise suffering in what has been a very, very difficult stage, and a very, very difficult crisis for our country, and we will continue to do that.”

Today, he confirmed schools will not reopen before 8 March.

The Steph Show airs weekdays from 12.30pm on Channel 4.
