The Tragic Death Of Jahmil French

Actor Jahmil French, who was best known as a star on Degrassi: The Next Generation, has died at the age of 29. “It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the passing of a dear friend and client Jahmil French,” the actor’s rep confirmed to People. “He will be remembered by many for his passion for the arts, his commitment to his craft, and his vibrant personality. I ask that you keep his family and friends in your thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.” As of the time of this article’s publication, no other details about French’s death — including the cause of death — are available. 

French rose to fame as Dave Turner on Degrassi from 2009 to 2013, per Entertainment Weekly. The actor’s career ventures also included Netflix’s drama series Soundtrack, Pop TV’s Let’s Get Physical, and the 2017 film Boost. Upon hearing the news of French’s death, many of his friends and former co-stars are paying tribute to the late actor on social media — keep scrolling to read what they’re saying.

Jahmil French’s Soundtrack co-worker Joshua Safran was the first to break news of the actor’s death. “I can confirm my good friend, co-worker, and all around inspiration, Jahmil French, passed away yesterday,” Safran tweeted on March 2, 2021. “Only posting because I see the story getting out there. I will have more to say about him later. Right now we’re all just processing this devastating news.”

More of French’s co-stars continue to share their tributes on social media. Melinda Shankar, who also starred in Degrassi, posted an Instagram tribute to her former co-star and friend, saying that French will “always hold such a special place in [her] heart.” She goes on to describe French as “one of the most talented, compassionate, kindest, funniest friends” that she had. 

Christine Prosperi, another Degrassi star, tweeted her condolences, calling her former co-star “truly one of a kind.” Chloe Rose tweeted her tribute as well, saying that French was “an integral part of the Degrassi family and certainly a huge part of my degrassi days.” Jessica Tyler also mentions the Degrassi “family” in her Twitter post and says that French’s “kindness and bright light will not be forgotten.”
