The Sunday Trading Act 1994 requires store opening hours to be minimised to six consecutive hours on a Sunday. The Act also forces shops to operate under Sunday hours on bank holidays like Good Friday and Easter Monday. Heading to the shops this weekend in a last-minute dash for some Easter Eggs or ingredients for Easter recipes? You’ll probably need to check the opening hours for Lidl, Aldi and Sainsbury’s.
Easter opening hours
All large shops must close on Easter Sunday and Christmas Day in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Technically, all large stores of more than 280 square metres must not open on these days and any stores caught breaching this law will face a hefty fine.
However, Scotland can continue to have “normal trading hours” around Easter.

All supermarkets can stay open on Easter Saturday (April 3) as this is not a Bank Holiday.
Good Friday (April 2) and Easter Monday (April 5) are Bank Holidays, which means stores must stick to Sunday trading hours on these days.
Customers might be unable to shop on Easter Sunday or their normal hours on the other Bank Holidays over the weekend, but that doesn’t mean all retail staff can relax.
Work may still be required to come in and work, and this doesn’t always mean extra or double pay.
The UK Government website states: “There is no automatic right for workers to have public holidays off, including Christmas Day and Easter Sunday, unless it’s in their contract.”
The following shops are exempt from Sunday trading hours and may be open on Easter Sunday:
- airport and railway station outlets
- service station outlets
- registered pharmacies selling only medicinal products and medical and surgical appliances
- farms selling mainly their own produce
- outlets wholly or mainly selling motor or bicycle supplies and accessories
- suppliers of goods to aircraft or sea-going vessels on arrival at, or departure from, a port, harbour or airport
- exhibition stands selling goods

What time does Lidl open?
Lidl’s website sets out clear opening times for all stores in England, Wales, and Scotland, but states that selected stores do vary.
Lidl stores in Scotland will remain open throughout the entire Easter week, but the opening times are different in England and Wales.
Stores are open as normal on Good Friday (April 2) and Easter Saturday (April 3) in England and Wales, but closed on Easter Sunday.
On Easter Monday (April 5), Lidl stores in England outside the M25 are open between 8am and 8pm, while stores inside the M25 will be open as normal.
In Wales, Lidl stores are open from 8am to 8pm on Easter Monday.
You should always check the opening times for your local store before paying a visit if you’re unsure.
What time does Aldi open?
As always, the best way to find out what time your local Aldi is open is to use the store locator.
You could also ring the store or check the signage at your local store.
However, Aldi has laid out the general opening hours for its stores on its website.
Keep in mind that Aldi opens half an hour early for vulnerable and elderly customers Monday to Saturday, so this slot is still off-limits to anyone else.
On Monday, March 29 to Thursday, April 1, Aldi is open between 8am and 10pm.
On Good Friday (April 2), Aldi is open between 8am and 8pm, and on Easter Saturday (April 3) they will open from 8am till 10pm.
Aldi stores will be closed on Easter Sunday (April 4) and reopen on Easter Monday (April 5) from 8am till 8pm.
What time does Sainsbury’s open?
Sainsbury’s opening hours will differ this week too, and you should check the store locator to find out the exact hours for your local store.
Sainsbury’s has not confirmed blanket opening hours for its stores, but it seems stores will be open on Good Friday from 8am till 8pm and 7am till 10pm on Easter Saturday.
As expected, Sainsbury’s will be closed on Easter Sunday and reopen on Easter Monday at 8am until 8pm.
