Bizarre horse race which bookies REFUSED to take bets on sees 'average' runner make history | The Sun

A BIZARRE two-horse race which bookies refused to take bets on saw the shortest-priced winner this century.

Little-known The Milkybar Kid was branded an 'average' horse before making headlines in Australia on Wednesday.

The three-year-old gelding was set to line up against six other rivals but ended up taking on just one after a spate of withdrawals.

Just one bookie was willing to take any bets at all on the two-runner contest.

And they priced The Milkybar Kid at 1-20 – equalling the record for the shortest-priced horse in Sydney this century held by the legendary Winx and Black Caviar.

As it was, jockey Brendon Avdulla and his horse ran out an easy winners over sole rival Naval Warfare.

But the jockey revealed all was not as it seemed in the home straight as his mount wanted to stop racing altogether and go the other way.

He said: "He just felt like he was out there on his own and if I let him he would have pulled up.

"I think he was ready to do a U-turn at the top of the straight.

"I just had to keep him going because he didn’t like the ground, but there always felt like there was more left there.

"When we were pulling and Jess [Taylor on Naval Warfare] came up next to me, he got competitive again and wanted to race, but the job was done."

Weirdly, the same jockey won at the same track in another two-horse race ten years ago.

But speaking of sealing The Milkybar Kid's third straight win, he said: "It’s not something you do every day and I’m just happy to get the win and keep the unbeaten record."

Those odds pale in comparison to the 1-100 Golden Sixty was sent off when turned over in a race at Sha Tin back in January.

That ended a 16-race unbeaten run at the hands of giant 14-1 shot Waikuku.

Punters recently slammed a 'pointless' match race at Brighton where the winner came in at 1-66.

That meant you'd have to risk £66 to win just £1.
