Chelsea in Fikayo Tomori transfer talks with Rennes with French side wanting to bring in outcast defender this summer

CHELSEA defender Fikayo Tomori is being targeted by French side Rennes, according to reports.

L'Equipe says the Ligue 1 outfit have contacted Chelsea to begin talks over a potential deal for the 22-year-old.

Tomori started the 2019-20 season impressively after returning to Stamford Bridge from a loan spell at Derby County.

He moved back to West London alongside fellow Rams loanee Mason Mount and boss Frank Lampard.

His early season form earned international recognition as England boss Gareth Southgate gave him his Three Lions debut against Kosovo in November.

But Tomori slipped down Lampard's pecking order amid competition from Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen and Kurt Zouma and was barely seen in 2020.

He made 15 Premier League starts but only the 2-2 draw with Bournemouth came this calendar year.

And he was substituted after the Cherries scored two quickfire goals at the start of the second half.

The report from France suggests the nature of a deal remains unclear, but a loan move would be more likely.

Lampard rates Tomori after managing him the last two years and although he may not be in his immediate plans he would be hard-pushed to sell the centre-back.

The Athletic previously reported a permanent deal is not in The Blues' vision.

Tomori was last month linked with a loan move across London to West Ham to help Lampard swoop for Declan Rice – with talk he sees the Hammers man as a future John Terry figure.

A temporary move to get more game time is thought to be best for Tomori's development and Rennes could offer him first-team and Champions League football after finishing third last season.
