Seattle Mariners outfielder Mitch Haniger suffered a ruptured testicle after fouling a ball off himself on Thursday and was placed on the injured list.
In the third inning of an 14-inning loss to the Houston Astros in Seattle, Haniger foul-tipped a pitch from Justin Verlander and the ball deflected straight into his groin.
Haniger, playing center field Thursday, stayed in the game and had another at-bat before being lifted for a pinch-hitter in the seventh.
The 28-year-old was batting .220 with 15 home runs and 32 RBI in 63 games for the Mariners this season. He was an All-Star in 2018 and finished 11th in AL MVP voting, hitting .285 with 26 home runs, 93 RBI and an .859 OPS.
There’s no immediate timetable for Haniger’s return.
