Favourite backers had laid into 10-11 Concertista in big-money singles, double and trebles in the race before Jeff Kidder's ridiculous win.

But the horse – now trained by Denise Foster instead of disgraced Gordon Elliott – won by the bob of a head at 11-1.

Jeff Kidder then added more misery on punters by winning at crazy odds.

The Noel Meade-trained horse had no friends in the betting before the start of the Boodles Juvenile Hurdle at 4.15.

Bookies were fearing the worst after 8-11 Appreciate It won by 24 lengths in the day's first race.

Shishkin obliged again for favourite backers by winning easily at odds of 4-9 in the Arkle Chase.

Vintage Clouds gave bookmakers some respite with a 28-1 triumph in the Ultimate Handicap.

But then the favourite onslaught was back on as Rachael Blackmore made history on 11-10 Honeysuckle in the Champion Hurdle, the big race of the day.

Spokesperson Paddy Power said: "I've probably lost a couple of stone in sweat and a few years off my life, but I've still got the shirt on my back – just.

"Black Tears saved us from an absolute bloodbath, but no mistake about it, the punters are well up after the first day."
