    HT: TURKEY 0-0 ITALY

The opener of the European Championships is goalless at the break despite Italy's domination. Roberto Mancini's team have dictated the tempo from the off but have been unable to make their possession and chances count, coming closest through Giorgio Chiellini's header that was tipped over by Ugurcan Cakir. Turkey have defended resolutely but offered very little in attack.

    THE HALF-TIME WHISTLE IS BLOWN!

    44. Penalty appeals galore, some more convincing than others.

At the end of a rare Turkey break, Yilmaz throws himself to the floor under the presence of Chiellini, but he's fooling nobody. The Italian captain laughs at his opponent's audacity, and it's a surprise that a yellow card isn't forthcoming for the striker.

Then, seconds later and at the other end, Spinazzola gets to the byline and chips a cross into the middle that clips the arm of Celik. It's a no from referee Makkelie, but VAR do take another – albeit quick – look before reaching the same conclusion.

    43. Pass. Pass. Pass. Pass. The Italians have gone old school in order to wear Turkey down.

Eventually, Immobile makes room for himself on the edge of the box with a swivel before firing straight at Cakir.

  • Sam Dymond

    TURKEY 0-0 ITALY

    40. Turkey goalkeeper Cakir looks to find Yilmaz on the move with a hefty punt downfield, but it would require the pace and energy of an athlete ten years younger in order for that to develop into an opportunity.

Instead, it's just a careless giveaway, and the Italians build again.

  • Sam Dymond

    TURKEY 0-0 ITALY

    39. Berardi is the latest to take aim, and the latest to thump a shot well wide of goal to end an otherwise impressive attack.

Already those pre-tournament concerns of the Italians being an excellent side but short of quality up top are beginning to look on the money.

  • Sam Dymond

    TURKEY 0-0 ITALY

    36. Immobile keeps practicing his curler.

He's on target this time from the edge of the box, but the shot is tame and straight at Cakir.

  • Sam Dymond

    TURKEY 0-0 ITALY

    34. A rare foray forward from Turkey that calls Donnarumma into action off his line for the first time.

The Italian keeper leaps forward off his line to acrobatically push a hopeful cross to safety.

  • Sam Dymond

    TURKEY 0-0 ITALY

    33. Another effort for Italy, another from Immobile.

The striker gets on the end of Berardi's cross from the left with a downward header at the far post, but it drops comfortably wide of the far post despite the somewhat panicked dive across goal from Cakir.

  • Sam Dymond

    TURKEY 0-0 ITALY

    32. The lively Insigne attempts to conjure something in the box.

He twists and turns before sending in a cross that's blocked behind by Tufan.

  • Sam Dymond

    TURKEY 0-0 ITALY

    30. Half hour in to this tournament opener. There are no goals as of yet, but there has been seven shots, all of them from players in Italian white.

Only Chiellini's header, however, have been on target.

  • Sam Dymond

    TURKEY 0-0 ITALY

    27. Soyuncu is caught in possession again, this time by Berardi, who also manages to dispossess Maras after he stepped in to rescue his teammate.

Cue some patronising chat from Guy Mowbray and Jermaine Jenas about Sassuolo.

  • Sam Dymond

    TURKEY 0-0 ITALY

    25. Turkish respite as those in red enjoy a spell of possession.

It ends when Yilmaz is flagged offside.

  • Sam Dymond

    TURKEY 0-0 ITALY

    24. The Italian pressure is become almost relentless.

Can this Turkish defence, so impressive in qualifying, hold out?

  • Sam Dymond

    TURKEY 0-0 ITALY

    23. Great save! Chiellini is unmarked at a corner, and powers a header towards the roof of the net. It looks a certain goal until Cakir flings himself skywards to tip over.

The Italian substitutes were up off the bench in celebration.

  • Sam Dymond

    TURKEY 0-0 ITALY

    21. Immobile cuts in from the right, and then crashes a long-range shot into the body of Soyuncu.

The Italian forward is convinced the Turkish defender has used his arm to block the ball, and lets nearby referee Danny Makkelie know in uncertain terms.

The on-pitch official isn't interested, and neither are those on VAR duty.

  • Sam Dymond

    TURKEY 0-0 ITALY

    17. Chance! Moments after hopeful handball shouts against Celik in the penalty area, Italy almost make a Turkey defence pleading innocence pay.

Insigne exchanges slick passes with Berardi, and then looks to curl towards the far corner. The Napoli man is unable to get enough bend on his final effort, however, and the shot swerves wide.

  • Sam Dymond

    TURKEY 0-0 ITALY

    16. Soyuncu steps out of defence with an air of confidence, but crumbles under the pressure of a quick press, ending up on his backside.

Yeah, you're not up against Fulham or West Bromwich Albion now..

  • Sam Dymond

    TURKEY 0-0 ITALY

    14. A turn by Insigne and incisive pass from Jorginho afford Italy some space to attack.

Barella advances forward, and then finds Berardi, who thumps an ambitious effort into the nearest defender. His better-placed teammates are far from impressed.

  • Sam Dymond

    TURKEY 0-0 ITALY

    12. Yilmaz gets in behind the Italian defence on the right, and on this occasion times his run perfectly.

His chipped centre is less accurate, however, and drifts beyond Turkish support from midfield.

  • Sam Dymond

    TURKEY 0-0 ITALY

    10. Demiral shows the kind of defensive nous that has already made him a name in Italy as a Juventus player.

The centre-back is alert to cut off a supply line provided by Insigne on the left.

  • Sam Dymond

    TURKEY 0-0 ITALY

    8. Turkey start to settle down and show a willingness to attack quickly in Italy's half.

Yilmaz, probably in an offside position, threatens to latch on to a loose touch by Chiellini, but the Azzurri captain manages to recover.

  • Sam Dymond

    TURKEY 0-0 ITALY

    6. Celik is given work to do as an attempted one-two from his throw-is overhit.

If it's a sign of nerves among the Turkish team in this partisan atmosphere, then it would not be a surprise.

  • Sam Dymond

    TURKEY 0-0 ITALY

    4. The Italians show their willingness to play out from the back.

Bonucci and Chiellini, 70-years-old between them, are seeing plenty of the ball.

  • Sam Dymond

    TURKEY 0-0 ITALY

    2. The Italians have begun on the front foot, and there's an early half-chance for Immobile.

The Lazio striker meets Berardi's pull-back at the near post with a first-time shot into the side netting. Berardi did well himself to keep the ball in play.
