Anton du Beke, 54, is one of the last remaining Strictly Come Dancing stars who have been on the show since it began in 2004. During Saturday night’s launch show, the professional dancer was partnered with former Home Secretary Jacqui Smith, 57, and the couple will compete together in this year’s series of the BBC dance show. However, the father-of-two has revealed he doesn’t always enjoy getting spotted by fans whilst out in public.

The stalwart joined gardening enthusiast Alan Titchmarsh, 71, on his ITV Sunday morning programme – Love Your Garden – this weekend and was asked how he feels about members of the public approaching him.

“Do you get people saying, ‘I’m having trouble with my Charleston step?’” the presenter inquired to which Anton admitted he did.

“‘Can I have a dance? Can I have a dance? Let’s have a dance’,” the professional remarked as he mocked some of the comments he has received.

Uttering the reply he would give, the father-of-two said: “‘What do you mean? I’m in the frozen food aisle.’”

Explaining a bit more about his experience of being on the show and becoming instantly recognisable, he said: “If I’m out socially and I might be dancing with my wife, for example.”

“Then I get a tap on the shoulder halfway through and they say, ‘Come and have a dance with my wife?’” Anton continued.

Again, he uttered the reply he would give to said member of the public, adding: “‘You dance with your wife, you brought her’.

“I get dragged away so I don’t tend to go out very often,” he admitted before Alan remarked: “We all have our problems.”

For the next couple of months, the professional dancer will be getting down to training with Jacqui as he hopes to do even better than he did last year.

The stalwart made it to the final with EastEnders actress Emma Barton, 43, but they just lost out to champions Kelvin Fletcher, 36, and Oti Mabuse, 30.

It seemed both Anton and Jacqui were excited to be paired together and the former Home Secretary has already explained she and her partner are training hard for Saturday’s first live show.

Unfortunately, according to the latest odds from Coral bookmakers, it seems the pair could be crashing out first.

At the moment, the politician’s chances of winning match those of comedian Bill Bailey, 55, with both standing at 50/1.

If the results and eliminations follow the trend of the bookmaker’s odds, it could either be Jacqui or Bil who leave first.

However, on the other end of the spectrum, soap star and EastEnders actress Maisie Smith, 19, looks set to lift the Glitterball Trophy.

During the launch show, she was coupled with Gorka Marquez, 30, after he was left without a celebrity partner last year.

The youngster’s chances of becoming champion currently stand at 2/1, with her closest competitors not too far behind.

A trio of celebrities; singer Max George, 32, chart-topper HRVY, 21, and Made in Chelsea star Jamie Laing, 31, are all at 6/1 in Coral latest standings.

Spokesperson John Hill said of the odds: “Maisie Smith is the one to beat this year according to our betting.

“The early signs all suggest she is going to be a big hit on the show over the next couple of months,” he continued.

All 12 contestants will be put through their paces and face the judge’s critiques when they return to the dance floor for their first solo performances next weekend.

Strictly Come Dancing 2020 continues Saturday at 7:25pm on BBC One. Alan Titchmarsh Love Your Garden airs Sundays at 10am on ITV.
