Bake Off: Matt Lucas mocks Boris Johnson's coronavirus address

Matt Lucas took the opportunity to mock Boris Johnson’s coronavirus address to the nation as he made his debut on Great British Bake Off tonight.

The comedian broke the internet in May with his uncanny impersonation of the Prime Minister and he wasted no time in poking fun at the leader once more as the brand new series got underway.

This time around, Matt donned a blonde wig and stood at a podium that read: ‘Stay alert. Protect Cake. Save loaves.’

Iconic.

‘Right, good evening,’ Matt began. ‘Let’s get straight to it.

‘We are now approaching phase 46 which means that from Tusday morning or Wednesday evening, depending on your height, we are seeing, with regards to baking…’

He continued: ‘If you must bake in a tent, then bake in a tent, but please don’t bake in a tent.

‘And we are asking people to use common sense with regards to the distribution of hundreds and thousands.’

Matt then took a question from ‘lady in the funky dress’ Noel Fielding, who asked for the correct pronounciation of the word ‘scone’.

Brilliant.

Matt was announced to be replacing Sandi in March just three months after she announced her shock exit.

Sharing her departure from the show, Sandi wrote in a statement: ‘When stepping down from a job it is quite common for people to say they are doing so in order to spend more time with their family.

‘Unusually I am departing from the Great British Bake Off soI can spend more time with my other work.

‘As my waistline will testify, Bake Off is an all-consuming show.

‘Spending time with Prue, Paul and Noel has been one of thegreat pleasures of my life. These are friendships which I know will continuebeyond the confines of television.

‘Bake Off is a wonderful programme which has already proved it can happily withstand a change of hosting personnel. The reason for that, of course, is that the true stars of the show are the bakers themselves. I wish everyone well.’
