Strictly Come Dancing returned with a sparkling, glitter-filled launch show with this year’s 15 celebrities meeting their professional dance partner for the first time. Dan Walker was revealed to be dancing with Nadiya Bychkova with the BBC Breakfast host asking if she was “disappointed” to be partnered with him. However, Nadiya admitted she was simply “worried” about how he’d cope with some of the routines.

As they sat down together after the pairing reveal, Claudia Winkleman remarked: “Do you know what is so cute about you, Dan – when a celeb meets their pro and goes, ‘Am I a terrible disappointment?’”

“I’m so happy I got Daniel,” Nadiya replied, revealing her nickname for the former Football Focus star.

Dan laughed: “She’s calling me Daniel. I feel very, sort of, talked to.”

“Well, Daniel is very worried he’s going to look like a daddy longlegs.”

Fortunately, Nadiya wasn’t too worried as she reassured Dan: “I think your long legs, that you’re tall – you’ll be amazing for ballroom.”

Ahead of the launch show airing, Dan revealed he had been in A&E after hitting his head.

He posted on his official Twitter account: “Bit of head-based drama today!

“After whacking my noggin on the big glass window yesterday I got sent to A&E today because I was feeling a bit wobbly.

“A lovely nurse at Barnet Hospital called Karina checked my vitals and 6ft 9 Dr Erik Witt gave me a CT scan which was clear.”

Sharing a snap of himself sitting in a chair being check over, he added: “No blood on the brain but I have to rest for a few days.

“I’ll be a bit behind but back at [dancing man emoji] next week.

“The NHS is amazing & I can’t tell you who my pro is but I can say she waited for hours in the car park to check I was ok. Whatever happens on TV, she has a friend for life.”

Meanwhile, Dan admitted he is “friends” with head judge Shirley Ballas and risks a favouritism row.

He told The Daily Star of becoming friends when climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in 2019: “We had some great conversations on that trip. I really got to know her quite well. I’m looking forward to seeing her.

“We’ve had a few Kilimanjaro reunions and I think she’s great and incredibly talented and she knows what she is talking about.”

Ahead of the live show, McFly star Tom Fletcher was the favourite to win the Glitterball Trophy.

Betfair marked his odds of winning at 9/2 with Eastenders star Rose Ayling-Ellis just behind him with odds of 11/2,

At the other end of the scale, Judi Love has odds of 25/1 to win as does actress Nina Wadia.

Betfair spokesperson Sam Rosbottom said: “On the eve of the UK’s most glamorous show starting, Tom Fletcher is the 4/1 favourite to waltz his way to the Glitterball trophy, while Rose Ayling-Ellis (11/2) and Rhys Stephenson (6/1) are close on his heels.

“Adam Peaty is 10/1 to follow up Olympic Gold with the Stricly crown, while Robert Webb is 8/1 and AJ Odudu 10/1.”

Strictly Come Dancing is available to watch on BBC iPlayer now.
