Shark Tank’s Barbara Corcoran, known for her savvy investments on the ABC show and her real estate empire, sadly made a statement to Fox news via her assistant, Emily Burke, saying “John Corcoran passed away at the end of April in the Dominican Republic from what is believed to be natural causes,” Burke told Fox. “Barbara would like to respect the privacy of his children and is not releasing any other information at this time.”
Cause of death
People reported that John Corcoran, 64, was vacationing in the Dominican Republic with a close friend and suffered a heart attack. Previous reports alluded that circumstances for his death mirrored those of other American tourists also recently found dead at their hotel in the resort area, but John’s daughter Nichole Lande says they are moving forward.
“My father had a heart condition,” Nichole Lande told People, “so his death didn’t come as a complete shock to us. Obviously, we didn’t expect him to die, and we are devastated.”
Other recent deaths in the Dominican Republic
According to People, the U.S. State Department has confirmed that several American tourists have died while in vacation in Punta Cana since the summer of 2018. The FBI and CDC are investigating, where NPR states, “Although there are similarities in the seven deaths — most are described as happening suddenly, and several after an alcoholic drink — federal officials have not determined whether there is any connection between any of the deaths.”
Yahoo reported that two Americans died at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana, and four passed away at several resorts of Bahia Principe. Heart attacks were the cause of three of the deaths, and one was due to an accumulation of fluid in the lungs, according to Yahoo.
Robin Bernstein, the ambassador of the United States to the Dominican Republic, made a statement on the recent high-profile deaths, saying they were isolated cases. “We have 2.7 million Americans who come to the country and the statistics is that this is a very… unique event,” Bernstein told Univision, according to People. “They come to visit the beautiful beaches and enjoy the great culture. Unfortunately, sometimes those things happen to people.”
Some family members of the deceased don’t see it that way. According to People, in one case, Pennsylvania resident Miranda Schaup-Werner, 41, was celebrating her anniversary with her husband when she collapsed while staying at the Luxury Bahia Principe Bouganville on May 25. “[Her husband] said one moment [Miranda was] taking pictures, smiling, happy and the next moment, in extreme pain and collapsing… she had no known health issues that I knew of,” Jay McDonald, a family spokesperson, told Fox News according to People.
John Corcoran’s daughter doesn’t think her father’s death was caused by anything suspect, “They were staying at a private home,” Lande told People. “There was no minibar, no malfunctioning air conditioner, nothing like the other cases. So this isn’t a mystery to us… it’s just a coincidence that it happened in the Dominican Republic like those other deaths.”
Corcoran comes from a large family

10 kids, 1 bath. I’m 10 times blessed having grown up as 1 of 10 children. My mom taught us that every child had a special talent and we all had to pitch in if we were going to be a strong family. I later built a happy company 1000 people strong on those two simple principals. Happy #nationalsiblingday ????
