Elliot Page to ‘continue playing Vanya Hargreeves’ in Umbrella Academy

Elliot Page will reportedly continue to play Vanya Hargreeves in The Umbrella Academy after coming as a non-binary transgender person.

The Juno actor shared a heartfelt statement on Tuesday announcing that he would be using he/they pronouns.

Fans of Netflix’s hit series The Umbrella Academy wondered how Elliot’s cisgender character Vanya would continue to progress in light of the actor’s news.

However, Variety reports that there are currently no plans to make any changes to the role or the character’s gender and Elliot is expected to return.

The Umbrella Academy, which began in 2019, follows a group of adopted superhero siblings, including Tom Hopper, Robert Sheehan and Aidan Gallagher, who attempt to halt a global apocalypse while also coming to terms with their adopted dad’s death.

Elliot had an important LGBTQ+ love story in the second series, which dropped on the platform earlier this year, and has gained a loyal fan following as a result.

The actor raved about how important this was for fans to witness and previously said of the ‘really exciting opportunity’: ‘Especially since it takes place in the ‘60s, being able to show some of the obstacles at that time obviously in an era where it was illegal, considered a mental illness.’

In his coming out statement, Elliot asked fans for ‘patience’ and said his ‘joy is real’ but also ‘fragile’.

He continued: ‘The truth is, despite feeling profoundly happy right now and knowing how much privilege I carry, I am also scared. I’m scared of the invasiveness, the hate, the “jokes” and of violence.

‘To be clear, I am not trying to dampen a moment that is joyous and one that I celebrate, but I want to address the full picture.’

‘I love that I am queer. And the more I hold myself close and fully embrace who I am, the more I dream, the more my heart grows and the more I thrive.

‘To all trans people who deal with harassment, self-loathing, abuse and the threat of violence every day: I see you, I love you and I will do everything I can to change this world for the better,’ he said.

Elliot has been overwhelmed with support from his celebrity peers and his wife, Emma Portner, who said she was ‘so proud’ of her partner.

The couple tied the knot in 2018 after going public with their romance in the summer of 2017.
