Harry Styles and Nick Kroll made headlines recently when they kissed at the Venice Film Festival, but it turns out that wasn’t the first time they shared a smooch.
The Watermelon Sugar hitmaker stars as Jack Chambers in Olivia Wilde’s Don’t Worry Darling, while Nick plays Bill in the newly-released thriller.
It would probably be an understatement to say the film’s release has been surrounded by drama, with reports of an on-set feud between Olivia (Bunny) and lead actress Florence Pugh (Alice).
But, Nick and Harry gave everyone a laugh during the press run when they kissed on the lips while receiving a standing ovation following the film’s first screening.
And it seems there was a reason for that kiss, as the actors jokingly replicated a moment from the movie itself.
In the opening scene, the two share a quick peck on the lips, but Nick says the moment was totally improvised and wasn’t discussed before cameras started rolling.
‘We just went for it,’ Nick laughed, in conversation with EW.
‘It was not like, “Hey, in this next take, let’s kiss.” It was spur of the moment. As it was, frankly, in Venice as well,’ he added.
‘There was no conversation before where it was like, “Hey, heads up, let’s kiss in front of the entire world.”
‘But I definitely think my stock went up with my nieces and nephews. And every teenage girl and boy around the world.’
Discussing the opening scene in more detail, Nick said the first scene of the film was shot on the last day of production, due to Covid.
‘That scene is really supposed to be the height of fun, loose Rat Pack energy. Olivia let us play and improvise. That just organically happened. And then they used it in the movie,’ he said.
Elsewhere in the interview, Nick shared how Harry is now an ‘active part’ of his marriage, after the Grammy winner was the first person he told about his engagement to Lily Kwong, whom he wed in November 2020.
‘Ironically, Harry was the first person to find out I was engaged,’ Nick said, as he proposed to Lily during filming and asked his fellow cast members for advice.
‘I had this long conversation about what to do, and then proposed the next day. Harry happened to text me being like, “Has it happened yet?” And I was like, “Yes, and she said yes.”
‘And then we told our parents, so literally, he’s an active part of my marriage. We’ll see what happens from here.’
Don’t Worry Darling tells the story of 1950s housewife Alice who lives a seemingly perfect, glamorous life in Victory.
However, Alice starts to question whether all is as it seems in her idyllic life, and soon discovers that her husband (Harry) is hiding a dark secret.
Don’t Worry Darling is in cinemas now.
