Has 'Cobra Kai' Filmed Season 4 Yet?

Cobra Kai premiered its third season on New Year’s Day 2021. Fans of the show since its 2018 YouTube premiere had waited almost two years to find out what happens to Miguel (Xolo Maridueña). After the show premiered on Netflix, even more fans eagerly awaited the new season. Now that fans binged season 3, it’s all a wait until season 4.

Fortunately, there’s good news. Cobra Kai co-creator Jon Hurwitz has shared updates on season 4 on his Twitter. Most recently, he gave an update on the completion of season 4. Find out when they wrapped below.

‘Cobra Kai’ Season 4 took a long time to go back into production

When Cobra Kai premiered on YouTube in May 2018, YouTube greenlit season 2 within a week. The second season premiered roughly a year later in May 2019. It ended on a cliffhanger when Miguel got injured in the season 2 finale high school battle royale.

That’s when things started to change. May 2020 came and went with no news of season 3 premiering on YouTube. This was near the beginning of the coronavirua (COVID-19) pandemic, but that actually wasn’t the hold up. They’d already filmed season 3, but were looking for a home.

YouTube had decided to get out of the scripted original programming business. They would air Cobra Kai Season 3 but then end the show. Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg and Josh Heald had a lot more story to tell, so they and Sony shopped the show around. Netflix agreed to air season 3, but wanted to introduce their viewers to seasons 1 and 2 first. Hence, the first two season premiered in August 2020 and season 3 in the new year.

‘Cobra Kai’ Season 4 filmed in 2021

By the time season 3 premiered on Netflix, Cobra Kai already had their season 4 writers’ room up and running. They were writing scripts for season 4, but they still didn’t know when they could film.

Production did resume under COVID-19 protocols early in 2021. Hurwitz tweeted a picture on Feb. 5 of himself masked up with a face shield ready to film.

Later in the season, Hurwitz tweeted more behind the scenes season 4 photos.

They finished filming season 4

That was quick! On April 29, Hurwit tweeted, “And now we’re wrapped! #CobraKai #Season4.” For added color, he tweeted a pic of a snake he saw walking home from the final shoot.

Schlossberg shared some more thoughts on the latest season of Cobra Kai:

Hurwitz continued to answer questions for fans on Twitter. He never spoils anything but offered some hints about season 4 of Cobra Kai. He’s promised more flashbacks like John Kreese (Martin Kove)’s Vietnam story, and more romance.

“Actors who have been cleared by Covid tests are able to kiss,” Hurwitz wrote. “Won’t spoil any season 4 smooching though. #CobraKai”

Netflix has not announced the premiere date for Season 4 yet.
