The long-running television show Keeping Up with the Kardashians has taken viewers through the family’s many ups and downs over its sixteen seasons that span more than a decade. Viewers have seen some truly shocking moments including then nine-year-old Kylie pole dancing in the first episode, Kim taking selfies as they drove her sister Khloe to jail for a parole violation, and plenty of family drama that keeps viewers tuning in.
Many people have voiced their displeasure with the show. Some find it ridiculous that the family is famous merely for being famous, creating a kind of Escher painting of absurdity. No matter the critics, plenty of people love (or love to hate) the Kardashians enough to keep their show going year after year. During all that time, we have to wonder what the camera crew thinks about these antics and their front seat to America’s most over-the-top reality drama.
The filming crew knows much of the “reality” is fake
One of the most famous moments on Keeping Up with the Kardashians was when Kim lost her priceless diamond earrings while vacationing in Bora Bora. The episode sparked loads of conversation and buzz, but reports say that it never happened. The entire incident was created for the camera, and it’s certainly not the only “real-life” moment that’s been called into question.
Many potentially real moments are recreated to get better lighting or delivery for the screen, including Kris Humphries’ proposal to Kim. The family has the right to edit and approve all footage, and the producers often air real moments out of order to create a better story and a more organized narrative. While many moments of the show may very well reflect the actual lives of the Kardashians, it’s safe to say that what we get is a carefully curated and edited version that’s made for our viewing pleasure rather than accuracy’s sake.
The camera crew; however, gets a much closer look at the actual family. They know when the scenes are being shot and re-shot. They know who is really fighting and who is putting on an act for the fans. Does this up close and personal look make the family more or less likable for the crew who spends so much time with them?
Even the family members get sick of the drama
One has to speculate the crew gets tired of the drama surrounding their subjects. After all, even the family members themselves have made it clear that their lives as reality stars for years on end is just too much. Rob Kardashian famously moved away from his family and out of the spotlight for several years. He even skipped Kim and Kanye’s wedding, and some have speculated that it was because he didn’t want to be in front of the cameras again.
Kourtney has also railed against the fame that has defined her life, calling the family’s obsession with being in the spotlight “disgusting” on air. She has suggested that the ongoing and constant attention makes it difficult to live her life.
The camera crew sees all of these emotions playing out over and over again, and it has to impact the way that they view the family and the show. Even if they have affection for some members of the family, do they get tired of seeing them fight with one another and struggle with the pressure of living their lives under a magnifying glass?
The crew gets honorary family status
While filming the Kardashians day in and day out has to be a difficult job that highlights the ridiculousness of the show, the crew is also there for some of the most real and most emotional moments of the family’s lives. For instance, the crew knew about Khloe’s pregnancy before her family did and watched Kim react to the trauma of being robbed. They’ve seen the family at their most vulnerable.
Another sign that the crew really cares about the Kardashians? They’ve stuck around for a long time. The core crew has been essentially the same since filming began in 2007, and Khloe even let the world know that members of the crew have cried right along with the family during some of the hardest moments. While being surrounded by the neverending drama has to be exhausting, it seems that maybe the Kardashians have grown on the camera crew just like they’ve grown on so many fans.
