Tommy, 20, and Curtis, 23, were told in the closing moments of last night’s Love Island fifth season premiere they would be choosing which of the five female cast members they want to couple up with.
The twist came after the five female islanders were already coupled up with the original five male cast members, with the latecomers’ decision leaving two contestants vulnerable in tonight’s second instalment of the ITV reality show.
Fans were overjoyed by the return of the hit series, which is presented by Caroline Flack, 39, with the host welcoming the contestants to their new home for this year’s summer of love at the beginning of last night’s programme.
With fans eager to see what drama awaits this year’s islanders, the show has already received the best viewing figures for a launch episode since the revamped series returned to ITV in 2014.
Expecting this series to be bigger and better
Overnight figures show an average of 3.3 million fans tuned in to see the young singletons begin their summer of love.
At its peak, the launch show held a viewership of 3.7 million with a combined audience of 4.2 million fans tuning in after ITV revealed the figures coming from ITV Hub streams.
Last year’s series opener only managed to capture an audience of 2.9 million, with the crowning moment for champions Dani Dyer, 23, and Jack Fincham, 28, drawing in a crowd of 3.9 million at its peak.
Ahead of the launch, bookmakers were already backing this year’s summer of love to give ITV the best viewing figures for the hit reality show.
Since the dating show was revamped in 2014, Love Island has continued to gain loyal and dedicated fans with this year set to be no different.
Coral bookmakers are hoping upcoming episodes will surpass records broken last year, with their odds at 1-2 for the show to beat the record of 3.96 million viewers tuning in on-average per night.
Speaking of the viewing figures for this year, Coral spokesperson Harry Aitkenhead said: “We’re expecting this series to be bigger and better than before and make it odds-on to smash through the records it set last year, which means four million viewers per episode is well and truly on the cards.”
Harry continued: “From a betting point of view it always proves hugely popular and we are expecting to take a record number of bets too over the course of the next few weeks.”
Last night’s episode didn’t disappoint as viewers got to know the islanders a little better as they themselves got better acquainted.
However, Instagram star Anna Vakili, 28, was left a little speechless when one of her fellow contestants revealed he already knew her.
It was revealed Sherif Lanre, 20, follows the pharmacist on the micro-blogging site, telling her, to which the islander replied: “Do you?”

Later on in the beach hut, Anna was seen telling the camera how she felt when Sherif dropped the confession.
“He just brought it out so casually. Like ‘Yeah I follow you on Instagram’. I was flattered but I didn’t expect it coming in here, that someone would follow me on Instagram.”
Gym Owner Anton Danyluk, 24, caused a bit of a stir with viewers after he coupled up with flight attendant Amy Hart, 27.
Joining Amy, host Caroline asked Anton: “Do you shave your whole body?” after noticing his hairless physique.
Caroline, Amy and viewers at home weren’t expecting what came next, as Anton revealed: “My mum usually shaves my bum for me, that’ll be Amy’s job now of course!”
Love Island 2019 continues tonight at 9pm on ITV2.
