Question of Sport recently returned to the BBC with a fresh look as Paddy McGuinness, Sam Quek and Ugo Monye replaced Sue Barker, Phil Tufnell and Matt Dawson. As well as a presenting shake-up, the sports quiz show now includes several new rounds. However, viewers were left disappointed by the team captains’ “lack of knowledge”.

Question of Sport featured a brand new format, host and team captains when it returned to BBC One in September.

Each week Sam, 33, and Ugo, 38, are joined by a host of celebrity guests including sports stars.

But BBC viewers tuning in to Friday’s instalment were not impressed by errors the team captains made and took to Twitter to vent their frustration.

Wendy Smith fumed: “I’m a 58-year-old dopey housewife, know nothing about sport, and even I did better than Quek’s team – and there’s three of ’em.”

Amy Andrews added: “If the new #QuestionOfSport is going to get anywhere, these new team captains really need to improve their overall sporting knowledge. Not recognising Lennox Lewis or Bairstow is shocking!”

Tom commented: “Jeezo this is painful to watch. Half the programme is watching their thinking time. With Barker, Tufnell and Dawson there was genuine chemistry and humour. The sad demise of a once excellent programme.”

Ann Eke quipped: “Feeling old, how didn’t they know Chris Evert? #questionofsport”

Anne raged: “Why is Paddy giving them a clue about [Formula 1] from 1950 until 2020?”

Joining Olympian Sam’s team on the episode was Olympic pursuit rider Ed Clancy and Commonwealth swimmer Jazz Carlin.

Sitting alongside Rugby star Ugo was footballer Kelly Smith and Welsh athlete Colin Jackson.

During the first round, Sam and her team were shown a photograph of professional boxer Lennox Lewis as they had to guess who he was.

They passed and struggled to guess who many of the other athletes were in the round too.

Tallying up their points from the round, Paddy told Sam he “couldn’t believe” she didn’t recognise Lewis.

“I can’t believe it, he’s your star player. It’s Lennox Lewis,” Paddy stated.

An embarrassed Sam shook her head and replied: “Oh my god, it is.”

“I would say good start, but it wasn’t,” Paddy added.

Sam agreed and told the host it was a “terrible” round for her team before Paddy moved onto Ugo’s team.

Ugo’s team also failed to answer some of the questions during the round, but they scored nine points as opposed to Sam’s team who obtained three points.

However, when the points were added up at the end of the episode, it was Sam’s team who were victorious.

Question of Sport continues on BBC One on Friday at 7.30pm.
