Amazon has announced this week its newest members of The Rings of Power cast as the Lord of the Rings series heads towards its second season. And while a number of big names have joined the ensemble, undoubtedly the biggest talking point came from the fact a new actor will be stepping into the role of Adar as Joseph Mawle exits the series.
Mawle brought the terrifying presence of Adar to life throughout the Rings of Power’s debut season on Amazon Prime Video.
In season two, that job will now be given to Peaky Blinders and Slow Horses star Sam Hazeldine.
An official explanation for the shock recasting hasn’t been announced by Amazon but Mawle has taken to Twitter to address the situation.
In view of his 8,003 followers, the former Adar star penned: “I loved my time exploring middle earth and diving into Tolkien’s mythology.
“I’m so honoured that the character was liked. He cared deeply about telling you his story.
“Though as an actor it remains my wish, my job description to explore new characters and worlds.
“Wishing all the best to cast and crew for S2, I’ll be cheering you on from the sidelines,” he concluded before signing off with a kiss.
Needless to say, it didn’t take long for LOTR fans to share their dismay and “disappointment” at the decision, with many thanking Mawle for his portrayal.
Twitter user @AdarsGuard replied: “I’m sad and somewhat devastated to know that you aren’t Adar in S2 anymore. You gave him depth and made me care for him.
“Thank you for your great work! Wish you all the best for the future and I hope to see you soon again.”
This was echoed by @LiaD1979 who weighed in: “Adar is one of the best characters ever created and your performance made us love him deeply.
“Middle Earth will miss you, but I follow your work since I first saw you in Ripper Street and I can’t wait to see all your new brilliant roles. #TeamAdar.”

Elsewhere, @DutchPryer remarked: “It’s been a privilege to see a master at work. Thank you for your everlasting contribution to Tolkien’s world and your dedication to Adar.
“You will be missed more than you know, but I’m excited to see where the future takes you. Cheers, Joe.”
Jack Rees concurred: “A real shame as you were brilliant in the role. But a talent as yours would be ‘casting your pearls before swine’ to continue in such a quizzical plot line with a patchy script.”
While @Farego contributed: “I’m disappointed that they recasted Adar, go to figure out why they decided to go with this change of the guard.” (sic)
Hazeldine hasn’t released a statement but did take to Instagram to share a link to the announcement on his Instagram stories.
The other new season two cast members include Gabriel Akuwudike, Yasen ‘Zates’ Atour and Ben Daniels.
Amelia Kenworthy, Nia Towle, and Nicholas Woodeson round out the new cast alongside the returning stars.
Express.co.uk has contacted Amazon for comment regarding the recasting.
