He’s the new Strictly Come Dancing professional, but almost ten years ago Kai Widdrington was auditioning in front of Simon Cowell on Britain’s Got Talent.
And Kai, 26, impressed Simon so much that the BGT boss went on to predict that the budding dancer would become a big star.
In the resurfaced footage from 2012, Kai, then aged 16, took to the stage alongside ballroom and latin partner Natalia in a bid to impress the BGT judging panel, which also included Amanda Holden, David Walliams and Alesha Dixon.
It wasn’t long before he was making the judges laugh as he explained how he and Natalia had met, joking that he had a string of women wanting to be his dance partner.
Kai told the all-star line-up: “Natalia’s originally from Cyprus. My teacher had been teaching over there and said, ‘there’s a girl over there who could be a good partner for you,’ so she came over to England for a trial.”
Amanda then interrupted, joking: “So you gave her a try out? Did you have a whole line of women you gave a try out to?”
Kai cheekily answered with a giggle, “I had a few, yeah. I had about ten or eleven.”
As David interjected saying he sounded exactly like Simon, Amanda then wanted to find more about their partnership, asking if they were a couple away from the dance floor.
After Kai said they were just friends, he jokingly added: “I think she fancies me a little bit.”
Kai and Natalia, who were living together at the time to practice their routines and said they had a “brother and sister relationship, then went on to perform their impressive choreography.
The routine, which started as ballroom and transformed into latin, went down a storm with the judges, as well as presenters Ant and Dec who were watching from the side of the stage.
The pair were met with loud applause by the audience, and David told them: “I was worried when you started.”
“I thought, ‘do I really want to see people doing ballroom dancing?’ there’s some show on BBC One, I’ve never watched it… but actually I think you two are fantastic dancers. Really, really great.”
Amanda added: “It was brilliant, the footwork was perfect. I really, really found it entertaining.”
Head judge Simon echoed his co-stars’ thoughts, saying: “I’ve got a real feeling about you that you’re going to make something of your lives through real hard work and focus.”
Kai and his partner then received four votes to take them through to the next round of the competition, with Simon telling the rest of the panel: “There’s something about him.”
