Soul: Jamie Foxx stars in trailer for Disney Pixar film
Soul has become the most-watched movie on Disney Plus during the Christmas season. The Pixar film has gained many fans in a short space of time, with many loving the gorgeous music included. So is the film based on soul music, and does its star, Jamie Foxx, sing?
Is Soul about soul music?
Soul is not about soul music, but the genre which preceded it and is often thought of as the basis for soul: jazz music.
Jazz is considered to be a precursor for many genres, including R&B, soul and bebop.
Blues was also a genre from which soul music grew, which was a precursor to jazz and grew up from the mid to late 1800s.

Jazz showed up nearer to the 1900s, and many versions of jazz have come from it, while other genres also found their basis here.
As for soul, which comes from jazz, R&B and gospel, this grew from the 1950s with singers such as James Brown, known as the Godfather of Soul, and Ray Charles, who combined various aforementioned genres to pioneer soul music.
The Pixar movie Soul focuses on a jazz musician, Joe Gardner (voiced by Jamie Foxx) who is about to get the gig of a lifetime before he ‘dies’, and his soul is sent to the afterlife.
Joe then begins his quest to return to Earth, even becoming involved with a soul who needs to find her spark (voiced by Tina Fey.)
Does Jamie Foxx sing in Soul?
Jamie Foxx is a huge star in the acting world, but he has also shown his musical chops too.
Jamie’s first album, Peep This, was released in 1994, but sadly was not particularly well liked by music critics.
His 2005 album, Unpredictable, was far more successful and saw him make a proper entrance into the music business, and he has since released three more albums: Intuition (2008), Best Night of My Life (2010) and Hollywood: A Story of a Dozen Roses (2015).
As well as that, he performed in the Oscar-winning movie Ray, where he played the iconic soul artist Ray Charles, but he did not sing on the soundtrack.
With that being said, he performed an excerpt of one of Ray’s famous songs, I Got A Woman, to act as a sample in Kanye West’s famous track Gold Digger.
Jamie worked with Kanye on his song Slow Jamz as well, performing with Twista and Kanye with a sung chorus.
However, despite his amazing musical talent, Jamie does not sing in Soul, as his character is a jazz piano player.
He is also a jazz music teacher, so it is only his spoken voice which is used for the part.
There is a sung moment in the movie, when Joe and Number 22 come across a subway performer, however this is singer Cody Chesnutt, who sings the song on the soundtrack album for Soul as well as in the movie itself.
While Soul may not be about the genre, it is all about music and certainly about soul.
