Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, Disneyland’s newest theme park area, opened with much fanfare thanks to the presence of OG “Star Wars” luminaries including creator George Lucas and stars Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford.
Ford was a last-minute surprise guest. When CEO Bob Iger called for the Millennium Falcon ride to start, Chewbacca had a little trouble with it.
“She may not look like much, but she’s got it where it counts,” Ford said from backstage before emerging to cheers.
He also paid tribute to the late Peter Mayhew, the former Chewbacca actor, saying, “Peter, this one’s for you.”
Among the celebrity guests were “Captain Marvel” star Brie Larson; “Avengers” actress Cobie Smulders and her husband, “Saturday Night Live” alum Taran Killam; and NBA legend Kareem-Abdul Jabbar.
Upon entering Galaxy’s Edge, visitors will experience the sights, sounds, and experiences of the remote planet of Batuu. They can visit Oga’s Cantina, interact with droids and other characters, and ride the most famous ship in the galaxy on Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run.
There are also live performances, like a blaster battle between Chewbacca-led Resistance fighters and Stormtroopers.
The 14-acre area opens Friday to the general public. Reservations are required through June 23 (and have already been taken).
Fans hoping to be among the first to experience the attraction should already have acquired a no-cost reservation, which will be required from Friday through June 23.
Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is set to open at Disney World on August 29.
