Strictly Come Dancing: Tom Fletcher and Amy Dowden test positive for Covid

Strictly Come Dancing has been thrown into chaos as Tom Fletcher and Amy Dowden have tested positive for Covid.

The McFly singer made his debut alongside his professional dance partner during the first live episode of the BBC One series on Saturday.

However, on Sunday, a Strictly spokesperson announced both Tom and Amy had been struck down by Covid-19.

They said in a statement: ‘Tom Fletcher and Amy Dowden have tested positive for Covid-19. The pair are now self-isolating separately following the latest government guidelines.

‘While they will both miss Saturday’s live show, Strictly Come Dancing protocols mean that all being well, they will return the following week.’

It comes just hours after Tom, 36, announced he was pulling out of McFly’s gig in Glasgow tonight after falling ill.

A statement shared on the band’s official Twitter account read: ‘Unfortunately Tom is unwell and won’t be onstage with us tonight in Glasgow. He sends huge and heartfelt apologies to all the fans he won’t see tonight.

‘The show will still be going ahead, we’re looking forward to seeing you all and need you guys to sing extra loud for us tonight.’

Tom added a short message himself, telling fans: ‘So, so sorry.’

The singer, who is married to Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here! winner Giovanna Fletcher, made his first appearance on BBC One’s Strictly on Saturday evening, where he and Amy performed a Cha Cha to Earth, Wind and Fire’s September.

Fans were thoroughly impressed with Tom’s dancing skills after he and Amy opened the show, with one tweeting: ‘Tom was very good for the first dance! Surprised me tbh but hes one to watch.’

Another said: ‘Wow, a great opening dance from Tom Fletcher, can’t believe he’s touring with McFly and rehearsing at the same time.’

This year’s Strictly has been rocked by chaos due to Covid measures, with an unnamed professional dancer testing positive earlier this month. However, they tested negative last Wednesday and reunited with their celebrity partner in time for last night’s episode.

It was also reported that three Strictly professional dancers have refused to take the Covid vaccine, sparking safety concerns.

A statement from the corporation hit back at claims that any of its cast and crew have threatened to quit over the unjabbed pros.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson waded into the row, urging the unvaccinated pros to get the jab.

‘I don’t want to bully people or to lecture them but, well I don’t mind lecturing them, I’ll lecture them: I think it is a great thing to do for yourself, your family, your community,’ he said.

‘I think people should get a jab and it is a wonderful thing to do.’

Strictly Come Dancing returns this Saturday at 7pm on BBC One.
