John Whaite and Johannes Radebe have made history as Strictly Come Dancing’s first all-male dancing duo on the BBC show. While the 32-year-old has managed to impress the judges so far, he recently shared his concerns about performing a “very sexy” Rumba when he appeared on Steph’s Packed Lunch.
The former Bake Off winner and his dance partner have won major praise from viewers and have been charming the BBC show’s judges since the series launched.
Last week the duo opened the Strictly Halloween special with a haunting quickstep to Creedence Clearwater Revival’s Bad Moon Rising dressed as werewolves.
John and Johannes, 34, are set to perform a Rumba to Shape Of My Heart by Sting on tonight’s instalment of Strictly.
However, the star opened up on his concerns about performing the “very intimate” routine in the competition when he appeared on Steph’s Packed Lunch.
John appeared on Wednesday’s instalment of the Channel 4 show alongside host Steph McGovern, Strictly judge Anton Du Beke and It Takes Two presenter – and former Strictly pro – Janette Manrara.
John explained the dances he and Johannes, 34, have performed on the show so far have been “very masculine” and “very powerful”.
So when he discovered he and Johannes would be performing the Rumba, he felt apprehensive.
He said: “I’m quite scared you know because it’s quite an intimate dance – it’s very sexy and very intimate and that’s what I am worried the most about.”
The star revealed he was worried about letting himself go on the dancefloor during the routine, adding that he didn’t want to look like an idiot.
To lighten the mood, Steph joked that John and Johannes could end up “snogging” during the intimate routine.
John quipped: “Well, yeah, it could happen, you never know. Anton will have to prise us apart!”
Janette, who appeared on the chat show via a video link, then reassured John that the Rumba does not always have to be sexy.
She explained: “The Rumba doesn’t have to be sexy, the Rumba can be quite beautiful, and quite elegant.
“I think Anton, you said it so brilliantly the other day that there are different types of Rumba you can do.
“You can do a sexy Rumba or you can have something that’s a little more classic and beautiful and elegant.
“So I wouldn’t worry too much about what you’re doing, I’d focus more on that special moment with Johannas because it will be quite a special moment.”
John agreed with the former Strictly pro and joked: “I’ll make sure I don’t have anything too strong to eat because I’ll be kind of in his face. So [I won’t have] mackerel or garlic.”
Last week, the duo received positive feedback from the programme’s judging panel and achieved a high score of 33.
Will they be able to score even higher with their Rumba?
Strictly Come Dancing continues Saturday at 6.45pm on BBC One.
