The Crown season four is set to show Princess Diana’s battle with bulimia, which is said to make the royals ‘incredibly uncomfortable’.
Actress Emma Corrin will portray the Princess binging on food before going to the toilet to vomit as her marriage to Prince Charles begins to break down.
The news comes after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle signed a rumoured multi-million-pound deal with the streaming service to produce documentaries, films and children’s programmes.
‘William and other senior royals are incredibly uncomfortable about this drama and livid Harry is now in partnership with the company that’s airing it,’ an insider claimed.
‘It’s the latest in a long line of flashpoints between the brothers, but there are few more sensitive subjects than the plight of their mother.’
The source continued to The Sun: ‘They said the Firm “wouldn’t expect one of their own to take money made by the profits of shows like this”.’
A spokesman for Left Bank Pictures, which makes The Crown for Netflix, said that producers worked closely with the eating disorder charity Beat to ensure their portrayal of Princess Diana’s bulimia was both accurate to the disorder and sensitively handled.
Beat told Metro.co.uk: ‘We were consulted by Netflix and Left Bank Pictures during the production of The Crown Season 4.
‘We were not involved on set, but advised on how to portray eating disorders in a sensitive and non-glamourising way, including signposting to appropriate sources of help and providing trigger warnings where needed.’
Princess Diana had previously discussed her eating disorder, telling Martin Bashir in a BBC interview in 1995: ‘I didn’t like myself, I was ashamed and I couldn’t cope with the pressures.
‘I had bulimia for a number of years, and that’s like a secret disease. It’s a repetitive pattern which is very destructive. It was my escape mechanism.’
Season four of The Crown is expected to cover a time period ranging from 1977, where the previous season left off, to around 1990.
Diana’s early days of her courtship with Prince Charles will feature and the trailer has already given fans a glimpse at the couple’s wedding day.
The brand new series will also see Olivia Colman return as Queen Elizabeth II and Tobias Menzies as Prince Philip, while Gillian Anderson is set to portray Margaret Thatcher.
The Crown season 4 will be available to stream on Netflix from Sunday 15 November.
