In the opening two episodes of The Good Doctor season four, fans were delighted to see Dr Neil Melendez (Nicholas Gonzalez) back in the show. However, by the end of the second outing, it was implied he might be making his last appearance. Here’s what one of the stars and the show’s creator have teased about this.

Has Dr Melendez left The Good Doctor for good?

Fans of The Good Doctor were left devastated by the death of Dr Melendez at the end of the third season.

He was one of the victims of the San Jose earthquake and his death was heartbreaking for viewers to watch.

However, hopes were ignited again when the character appeared in the season premiere of season four.

Dr Claire Brown (Antonia Thomas) was struggling in the opener to deal with the loss of him as well as the COVID-19 crisis impacting the hospital.

But in the final few moments, she heard Melendez reassuring her all would be okay in a vision.

This continued into the second episode of the season when Claire kept seeing her former love in visions as she worked in the hospital.

However, by the end of the outing, it was implied Claire was getting ready to move on with her life.

As a result, it seemed like her visions of Melendez would be coming to an end.

Speaking about if this will be the last we’ll see of this character, creator David Shore opened up to TV Line.

He said: “Can’t rule it out, but we have no plans.

“I don’t want to over-promise in that regard.”

Shaun Murphy star Freddie Highmore also was keen not to rule out a potential return as well.

In an interview with TV Guide, he was asked whether Melendez will be coming back once again.

Highmore replied: “You never know, at least these first two episodes show that there’s a definite possibility [for him] to remain a part of the show in certain ways, so absolutely.

“As we would have said at the end of season three, I think that still stands today… hopefully, he will continue to be a part of [the show] in whatever ways possible.”

The star also revealed how much he enjoyed working with actor Nicholas Gonzalez again on the show.

He added: “It was lovely to see [Nicholas] and lovely to have him back.

“At the end of season three, we were all hoping that this wasn’t the last that we’ll have seen of Dr Melendez.

“Certainly, I wanted more of that story. And I feel like more people did.

“This is a lovely way to bring him back that’s in keeping with the emotional, the sort of character development and understanding in a deeper way, what Claire is going through from her loss.”

The Good Doctor airs on Mondays on ABC.
