History buffs searching for a new drama to sink their teeth into should look no further than The Good Lord Bird. The Antebellum-era drama is adapted from James McBride’s novel of the same name and gives a fictitious account of the real-life anti-slavery raids by god-fearing abolitionist John Brown (played by Ethan Hawke). The Good Lord Bird charts the struggles and less than pacifist means employed by Brown and his crew to bring about the end of slavery.
Brown believed slavery broke the rules of god and Christianity and embarked on a mission to trigger uprisings across America to stop it.
Although his raids weren’t successful, he certainly sowed the seeds which led to the American Civil War and the eventual abolition of slavery.
The show sees historical events playing out in 1859 and culminating in the raid at Harpers Ferry.
