The popularity of The Office might have only grown since it’s been available on Netflix. But the reactions to certain moments are different with time. Rashida Jones, who played Karen Filippelli, thinks one relationship on the show couldn’t be written today.
Steve Carell said ‘The Office’ wouldn’t work today
Many fans are hoping the cast will reunite to create new episodes one day. But Steve Carell, who played Michael Scott doesn’t seem interested in doing that.
“Because The Office is on Netflix and replaying, a lot more people have seen it recently,” he told Esquire. “And I think because of that there’s been a resurgence in interest in the show, and talk about bringing it back. But apart from the fact that I just don’t think that’s a good idea, it might be impossible to do that show today and have people accept it the way it was accepted ten years ago. The climate’s different.”
Carell pointed out Michael’s inappropriate behavior as being one the reasons it wouldn’t work. The actor actually left the show before it ended. However, he did return to make an appearance in the finale.
An episode was edited due to blackface
One of the episodes that didn’t age well was “Dwight Christmas.” The episode shows Dwight (Rainn Wilson) trying to get the office to celebrate the holiday following the traditions of the Pennsylvania Dutch.
Dwight dresses up as Belsnickel and explains how he’s supposed to give gifts to those who are good. Mose (Michael Schur) also dresses up as Black Peter, which uses blackface. However, Dwight calls him when he’s in the parking lot and tells him to not come into the office in the offensive makeup.
The small scene was edited out and can no longer be found on streaming. Other actors have pointed out other ways the show couldn’t be done the same way today.
She doesn’t think Toby and Michael’s relationship would be written today
Jones was a guest on the Office Ladies podcast to talk about the episode “A Benihana Christmas.” The episode shows Pam (Jenna Fischer) and Karen teaming up against Angela (Angela Kinsey) to make their own Christmas party. Michael also goes to Benihana and brings back a waitress to the office that he tries to hit on.
“Michael wouldn’t have a job with that behavior probably,” Jones said. She then went on to talk about Michael’s hatred for Toby (Paul Lieberstein), who works in human resources.
“And that’s the funny thing too that Toby is the enemy,” the actor said. She described the character as “sensitive” and tries to take care of people. “Michael hates him so much for it because he’s killing his party and this feels like a relationship you couldn’t even write today really,” Jones said.
Michael’s hatred of Toby is usually played for laughs. Their scenes show how terrible Michael is as a boss. Jones is certainly isn’t alone in thinking the sitcom did some things that wouldn’t work today.
