The Nathan Fillion-led crime drama has become one of ABC’s most popular dramas in recent years and season four of The Rookie is no different. Typically airing each Sunday in the USA, fans have loved tuning in to see what predicaments Nolan (played by Fillion) and the rest of the team wind up in. And given the action-packed ninth instalment of the season, titled Breakdown, episode 10 can’t come soon enough.

However, as is typical of the US TV schedule, the next episode of The Rookie has been pushed back from its weekly time slot.

This is down to the festive schedule in the States, with a number of dramas and series taking a break for Christmas time.

Instead, next Sunday’s evening schedule on ABC is dominated by the classic film, The Sound of Music.

There is some good news for The Rookie fans, however, as episode 10, titled Heart Break, does have a confirmed release date.

According to The Futon Critic, season four will be back on January 2.

And the good news doesn’t stop there as this season of The Rookie – unlike a number of other shows – will air a full-length season.

Confirming to TV Line that 22 episodes in total are on the way, showrunner Alexi Hawley said: “They [ABC] asked us to do 22,

“And I asked Nathan [Fillion] if he would be good with it and he said he would, so…”

While fans may be waiting a few weeks following the delay, it looks like the drama will be worth the wait.

None least because one of the biggest twists from episode nine threw Nolan’s plans for a Bailey (Jenna Dewan) romance on its head.

Just as the pair’s chemistry continued to heighten on a romantic date, the pair were rather abruptly interrupted by an unexpected figure.

Bailey’s estranged husband Jason (Steve Kazee) arrived to throw a spanner into the works.

And Hawley has spoken out about the love triangle to come – and it certainly sounds like it’s going to be big for Nolan.

“He’s her husband,” Hawley added to TV Line. “Obviously we will get into why she didn’t tell John and all that.

“Going into the next episode, we will be teasing a complicated history there.”

And judging by the reaction from ABC viewers to the twist, it seems many can’t wait to see how the story unfolds come January 2.

Twitter user @hyjohhny355 reacted: “@therookie I never thought that Bailey was marry or still marry. Why hasn’t she divorce him?

“Nolan was in total shocked at the news. I hope he doesn’t ended it with her,” they feared.

“HUSBAND?! BAILEY’S MARRIED?! #TheRookie,” @AvsPackerFan added, while @reeniem19 echoed: “Bailey is MARRIED?! WHAT?! #TheRookie.”

And @jstark804 weighed in: “So in January, we’ve got Lucy asking about Ashley, and asking if they broke up. And we’re learning more about Bailey’s marriage. January 2nd can’t come soon enough. #TheRookie.” (sic)

The Rookie season 4 resumes on Sunday, January 2 on ABC in the USA. A UK release date is yet to be announced.
