POP star Demi Lovato came out as non-binary in May 2021.
At the time, Lovato tweeted, "I am proud to let you know that I identify as non-binary & will officially be changing my pronouns to they/them moving forward.”
What are Demi Lovato's pronouns?
After her May announcement, Lovato asked to change they pronouns to "they/them."
Non-binary people do not identify as male or female and tend not to conform to gender norms of either.
Lovato – who came out as pansexual in March – wrote on Instagram at the time: "Every day we wake up, we are given another opportunity and chance to be who we want and wish to be.
"I’ve spent the majority of my life growing in front of all of you… you’ve seen the good, the bad, and everything in between. Not only has my life been a journey for myself, I was also living for those on the other side of the cameras.
"Today is a day I’m so happy to share more of my life with you all – I am proud to let you know that I identify as non-binary and will officially be changing my pronouns to they/them moving forward."
The singer added: "This has come after a lot of healing and self-reflective work. I’m still learning and coming into myself, and I don’t claim to be an expert or a spokesperson.
"Sharing this with you now opens another level of vulnerability for me. I’m doing this for those out there that haven’t been able to share who they truly are with their loved ones.
"Please keep living in your truths and know I am sending so much love your way."
Demi also shared a teaser for their new podcast series 4D, in which they explained: "Over the past year and a half, I’ve been doing some healing and self-reflective work."
They went on: "And through this work I have had the revelation that I identify as non-binary. With that said, I’ll officially be changing my pronouns to they/them.
"I feel that this best represents the fluidity I feel in my gender expression, and allows me to feel most authentic and true to the person I both know I am and still am discovering.
"I want to make it clear that I am still learning and coming into myself. I don’t claim to be an expert or a spokesperson."
What has Demi Lovato said about people still misgendering they?
Lovato has opened up to their fans about recently changing their pronouns to they/them, explaining that it’s “okay” if they are accidentally misgendered.
On July 13, Lovato shared an Instagram post where they asked fans to simply “respect” their wishes.
“If you misgender me – That’s okay,” they began.
“I accidentally misgender myself sometimes! It’s a huge transition to change the pronouns I’ve used for myself my entire life. And it’s difficult to remember sometimes!”
The singer continued: “As long as you keep trying to respect my truth, And as long as I remember my truth, The Shift will come naturally.
"I’m just grateful for your effort in trying to remember what means so much to my healing process.”
Lovato added a caption underneath the post explaining why they wanted to issue a statement to their fans.
“I felt the need to post this because I often find that the change in pronouns can be confusing for some, and difficult to remember for others,” they wrote.
“It’s all about your intention. It’s important to me that you try, but if you make a mistake, it’s okay. Remember that I love you, and to keep going.”
