Demore has been a part of the Law and Order universe since 2019, with his alter-ego Christian Garland becoming one of the show’s most notable characters. Not only has he starred in Law and Order SVU but he also featured in a crossover episode the show had with its sister programme, Law and Order: Organised Crime. The Deputy Chief will make his departure in the season 23 premiere, so here is everything you need to know about why the actor is leaving the NBC drama.

Why has Demore Barnes left Law and Order SVU?

The actor has featured in more than 24 episodes of the hit spin-off series after replacing Peter Gallagher’s Deputy Chief William Dodds.

Demore’s character Christian has broke ground with his appearance on the show as he is the first Deputy Chief in the Law and Order franchise to be credited as a main cast member.

This, along with his need for justice has made him one of the most beloved stars on the show but the actor has no idea why he’s leaving.

Taking to Instagram, Demore shared his reaction to his character’s exit with his 16,800 followers in a short video.

In the three and a half minute clip, the actor explains how he wanted to get his side of the story across to fans.

“In the midst of what has happened, there are things I know and things I don’t,” Demore said as he began his statement.

“What I know is that it is almost every actor’s desire and right of passage to appear in just one episode of Law and Order SVU.

“Here I am. I’ve not only gone on to appear in more than one episode but I know I’ve done it with style,” he added.

The actor goes on to say he is pleased to have helped the show get its best ratings in several years and proud to have been the “first black deputy chief” to feature in SVU.

Don’t know what’s happened

Demore also paid tribute to his fellow cast members who have acted alongside him over the past two years and the crew who helped behind the scenes.

He also thanked the network which airs the series, NBC, and Wolf productions for allowing him to be a member of the cast.

Concluding his statement, the actor said: “Don’t get me wrong. Don’t hear that I was just happy to be here.

“Because while I know you were happy I was here and I’m happy I was here, I also know you are sad and surprised [at my exit].”

“I am too,” Demore continued, before declaring to his followers: “I don’t totally know why this has happened.”

Several of his fans reacted to the post, with JaydStepick writing: “You were a wonderful addition to the SVU cast and you’ll be missed. I look forward to the work you do next.”

Sacred_heart_21 added: “No words to describe how sad I am about your character’s departure. Either way, you left an indelible mark on the show.”

“Loved your role. I hate getting used to characters and then boom they’re gone. Good luck with the next chapter. Will miss you,” RyanBaby86 commented.

How will Demore Barnes leave Law and Order SVU as Christian Garland?

Ahead of the season 23 premiere, it hasn’t been revealed how the character of Deputy Chief Garland is going to make an exit.

It was hinted in season 22 how he could make his departure after he was deposed from one of the most high-profile cases the team had investigated.

He also indicated his health could be on the decline, possibly signposting towards his upcoming death on the show.

Having been a part of just three seasons, the door could be firmly shut on the beloved character with no chance of a return in the future.

Law and Order SVU season 23 premieres on Thursday, September 23, on NBC in America. A UK release date is yet to be announced.
