Mayor Bill de Blasio and the mayor of London slapped back at President Trump on Monday after the commander-in-chief compared the two, saying Sadiq Khan reminds him of our “dumb and very incompetent” mayor of New York.
“#ConDon takes another shot at me. But I’m a total @SadiqKhan stan, so consider any comparison a compliment,” de Blasio wrote on his Twitter account several hours after Trump’s posting, using the moniker he coined for the president when de Blasio announced his presidential bid last month.
”@realDonaldTrump is Putin’s twin, only his presidency will be shorter,” Hizzoner wrote in another posting.
Khan, who has been feuding with Trump for several years, repeated the attacks he made over the weekend in a column for a British newspaper.
”From rolling back women’s reproductive rights to defending white supremacists and far-right nationalists – President Trump’s behavior flies in the face of ideals America was founded upon,” Khan wrote on Twitter. “As the US’s closest friends we have a duty to speak out.”
Khan, writing in The Observer, argued that Trump doesn’t deserve the red-carpet treatment Great Britain is rolling out for him during his state visit that began Monday.
The London mayor called Trump “just one of the most egregious examples of a growing global threat” posed by far-right leaders around the world.
Trump, aboard Air Force One heading to England early Monday, blasted Khan.
The president said the mayor has been “foolishly ‘nasty’” to him, calling Khan a “stone cold loser who should focus on crime in London, not me.”
“Kahn reminds me very much of our very dumb and incompetent Mayor of NYC, de Blasio, who has also done a terrible job – only half his height,” Trump continued in another tweet, misspelling the mayor’s name. “In any event, I look forward to being a great friend to the United Kingdom and am looking very much forward to my visit. Landing now!”
Donald Trump Jr. joined the online fight in defense of his father.
”Fix the subways… they’re almost as bad as your Twitter game. #yourewelcome #nyc,” he wrote.
Khan and Trump have been quarreling for years, with the mayor blasting Trump’s Muslim ban and treatment of immigrants.
Trump slammed Khan for his “pathetic” behavior after an attack on London Bridge in 2017 killed eight people and injured another 48.
