Girl, 10, shot dead in drive-by shooting while playing in street with her pals

A 10-year-old child was tragically shot dead just two days before before her 11th birthday as she played in the street with her friends.

Rafaelly da Rocha Viera, 10, had been playing with her friends outside in Sao Joao de Meriti in Brazil when a bullet from a drive-by shooting struck her in the chest.

Rafaelly survived the initial shooting and was rushed to a local emergency unit. However, the schoolgirl fell into cardiac arrest and she sadly died.

The Civil Police, who are investigating the case, said locals in the area at the time of the incident reported that the shots came from a passing car.

In response, locals in the busy area allegedly began stampeding away from the scene and panic broke out.

“On hearing the shots, her mother comes down shouting loudly, ‘My daughter, my daughter!’”, local Luiz Claudio da Silva said.

“We saw that it was little Rafaelly who had been hit and was lying on the ground. We don’t know who the perpetrators of the shots were nor whom they were for.

“I know they went into the street with lots of children, we are not used to this. Shooting at random.”

The attack has sparked outrage in the close-knit community.

Tributes have also been pouring in for Rafaelly who was due to celebrate her 11th birthday at the weekend.

Carlos Henrique da Roche, Rafaelly’s uncle, said his niece had a “happy” personality.

“Rafaelly was a lively, cheerful child. Everyone saw that she respected the elderly, she was helpful.

She loved playing, so much so that she was playing in the street at the time of the incident. She was a normal child, she still had everything to live for.”
