A pensioner has tragically died after a freak accident at a McDonald’s drive-thru.

The 89-year-old pedestrian was collapsing into a “slow moving” vehicle as it left the fast-food joint, police said.

He had slipped on a nearby web before the Toyota Sedan ran into him at the hamburger outlet in Adelaide, Australia, on Wednesday.

Paramedics rushed the victim to a local hospital with minor injuries but he later died, 7News reported.

He succumbed to his injuries at noon on Thursday, according to reports.

Police have appealed for any witnesses to help piece together how the freak accident occurred.

It is the fourth death already on South Australian roads in 2021, a police spokesman said on Thursday.

A spokesman for McDonald’s told Daily Mail Australia it was working with authorities.

They said: “We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the person involved in this accident.”

“The restaurant is assisting police with their investigation and we have offered our full support to employees working at the time”.

South Australia Police said in a statement: “Just before midday on Wednesday 6 January, patrols were called a fast food restaurant on South Road, after an elderly man slipped on the kerbing before striking his head on a slow moving Toyota sedan which was exiting the drive through.

“The 89-year-old man from Kingswood was taken to the Flinders Medical Centre with minor injuries but sadly died.

"The circumstances surrounding this incident continue to be investigated and anyone who witnessed the event is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000."
