Man who claims to be heir of DeLorean has prototype car torched and house egged

A Cornishman man has had his house broken into and his car torched as he claims to be the son of American automobile legend John DeLorean, the DeLorean car company's founder.

Ty Delorean has ambitious ideas for the company but has recently been in trouble after one of his prototype models was burnt to the ground.

Speaking to Cornwall Live, the 40-year-old lives in Newquay and has discussed his plan to reignite the DeLorean Motor Company (DMC).

On Thursday, Ty returned to his White Cross home to check the damage after receiving anonymous threats.

His Back To The Future style car, DMC 21 had been rolled out of its shipping container and is completely burnt to ash and shards on the floor.

Ty explained how he was planning on taking the car to the next British Motor Show to show it off, after driving it around his local area.

Inside the home itself which was also broken into, a DMC pin board was covered in raw egg while several pieces of paperwork are missing.

Ty said: “It’s just really depressing.

“I’ll recover, I’ll rebuild – but it’s just really upsetting that someone would do this to me. Whether it’s out of jealousy, or spite.

“I have three prototypes now, though, and I still have the plans. It seems they jumped my gate, and smashed my door.

“They egged the place on the way out.”

The 40-year-old was unsurprised by the damage made but was not insured.

The car which was destroyed was built over two years and Ty was convinced it could have saved the DeLorean company if it had been released in 1981 when it was originally planned.

He continued: “It wasn’t insured.

"So it’s a total loss of around £40,000 with the development and all the rest.

"I have others close to completion. This hasn’t deterred me, if anything it’s made me more determined.

“It won't stop me. People either love or hate the car. And with the loss, it’s just a car at the end of the day, no one’s died. I can rebuild.”

A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesperson said: “Police are investigating a burglary at a rural property in the White Cross area of Newquay.

“Offenders entered the premises by damaging the front door. An untidy search was made and damage caused inside.

“A car was also destroyed by fire.

“The incident happened between 8pm last night and 8am on November 11."
