It is the height of summer in Australia and onlookers will be enjoying the fireworks while basking in 26C heat. Elsewhere in the world, many New Year’s celebrations have been cancelled, such as the famous riverside fireworks display in London, which has been called off for the second year running, due to the rapid spread of the Omicron variant of coronavirus. Boris Johnson has said he believes “everyone should enjoy New Year” but that they should be sensible and do so with caution.

The family firework show has begun in Sydney, just a few hours before the midnight firework display will kick off the new year.

New Year’s celebrations have kicked off in Sydney with a smoking ceremony to honour the Gadigal people, a group of indigenous people whose traditional lands are in Sydney and who were previously dependant on the harbour for providing most of their food.
