An 86-year-old grandmother was raped on a farm by a man who offered her a lift to buy milk.

The victim was attacked on Monday evening in west Delhi’s Chhawla region in India, while on her way to a nearby village.

She had been waiting for the milkman before the assailant carried out the horrifying assault.

Swati Maliwal, head of the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW), told the BBC: "He told her that her regular milk delivery man wasn't coming and offered to take her to the place where she could get milk."

The victim was then taken to a nearby farm and raped.

Ms Maliwal added: "She kept crying and begging him to leave her. She told him that she was like his grandmother.

“But he ignored her pleas and assaulted her mercilessly when she tried to resist and protect herself.”

Local villagers rushed to the scene after hearing the victim’s cries, apprehended the attacker and called police.

Officials arrested a 37-year-old man identified as Sonu, a plumber from Rewla Khanpur, Delhi, the Indian Express reports.

Ms Maliwal visited the survivor at her home on Tuesday along with DCW panel member Vandana Singh.

She said: “Her hands are totally wrinkled. You get a shock when you hear what she went through.

“There are bruises on her face and all over her body and she told me that she had vaginal bleeding. She is suffering from extreme trauma."

Ms Maliwal added: “From a six-month-old girl to a 90-year-old woman, no one is safe in Delhi.

Ms Maliwal called the attacker “not human” and has written to the chief justice of Delhi High Court and the lieutenant-governor of the city to “fast-track the case and hang him in six months”.

Indian police recorded a horrifying 33,977 rape cases in 2018 – and there are fears the true number could be far higher.

Earlier this month, a health inspector in the southern state of Kerala was arrested for raping a 44-year-old nurse who approached him for acoronavirus-negative certificate.

Another ambulance driver allegedly raped a 19-year-old Covid-19 patient while taking her to hospital in Kerala’s Pathanamthitta district.

Last month, a 13-year-old was raped and murdered before her body was dumped on a sugarcane field in northern Uttar Pradesh state.
