A Spanish prisoner cut his own penis off on Christmas Eve after his wife wouldn’t come to see him for a conjugal visit.
Medics saved the unnamed inmate’s life in the medical centre of a prison in Puerto de Santa Maria near Cadiz, Spain.
It is not yet clear if staff were able to reattach his penis. Local reports claim the man has mental health issues.
TAMPM Puertos – an association representing prison workers – confirmed the case, saying: ‘An inmate amputated his penis because his wife didn’t want to go to prison to see him.’
A conjugal visit is a scheduled period in which an inmate is allowed to spend several hours or days in private with a visitor, usually their legal spouse, to engage in sexual activity if they wish.
UK prisons do not allow conjugal visits but give inmates home visits shortly before they are released.
It comes after another prisoner in Spain had to be rushed to hospital after he cut off his ears and ate them in September.
The man blacked out after eating the body parts and was overpowered by prison guards at a jail near Badajoz.
Guards were not able to find his ears and realised he had either eaten them or flushed them down the toilet, according to reports.
The man suffered from a psychiatric disorder and was treated at Badajoz’s University Hospital.
Prison guard unions say episodes such as these show the danger of holding people in prison when they should be in psychiatric units.
One union source told El Periodico de Extremadura at the time: ‘In Spain there are only a couple of centres of this sort and they’re clearly insufficient.’
