Scripps National Spelling Bee ends in 8-way championship tie

The Scripps National Spelling Bee ended in an unprecedented eight-way tie Friday morning when the competition’s moderators ran out of words for the contestants after 20 rounds.

“It’s complete. They will forever be remembered as the Elite Eight,” the announcers said after soon after they competition ended.

The eight co-champions spelled the final 47 words correctly, going on a perfect run for the last five rounds of the competition. It’s the first time in the history of the quiz that more than two co-champions split the top spot.

The co-champions will each receive a $50,000 prize.

The winners beat out a field of 564 other contestants, ranging in age from 7 to 14.

The winners included one 12-year-old, six 13 year olds and one 14-year-old.

New Jersey natives Shruthika Padhy and Christopher Serrao were among the winners.
