Tokyo residents and three surrounding areas have been told to avoid non-essential outings, while restaurants and bars have been asked to close at 8pm.

Crowds at sports and other events have been limited to 5,000 people, but shiops and schools will remain open.

The new tough restrictions will remain in place until at least February 7, with a warning they will not be lifted in Tokyo until cases decline to 500 a day.
