UK weather: Wet and windy start to the working week as clouds dominate

It's a wet and windy start to the week as clouds hover over swathes of the UK.

This morning rain and gusts will engulf the north-west of England, though south and eastern regions will remain relatively dry.

Temperatures in London could reach as high as 73F (23C) whereas northern regions will see highs of just 66F (19C) and Scotland will rest around the 60F (16C) mark.

By the evening the wind and rain will spread from the north-west southwards to cover the west of the country.

But the drizzle is set to ease and skies are expected to clear as the night progresses, save for scattered showers in western areas.

Fog will hang over Britain in the early hours of Tuesday before the rain returns.

The west of Scotland is set to suffer particularly bad downpours, with rain returning to the north-west of England again.

Showers will be heavier on Tuesday than they were on Monday as the wet weather persists.

For the rest of the UK, it will be a largely dry day but cloudy and dull as grey skies dominate.

On Wednesday it's Norther Ireland's turn for showers, with rain also hitting northern Scotland, northern England and Wales.

The wet weather is expected to shift southwards before drier conditions prevail in the afternoon.

Thursday is expected to be drier, though clouds will still hang over the country with sunshine unlikely.
