In what forecasters are calling a “rare” event, Australia saw snow Monday in parts of its eastern coast that hadn’t had a significant snowfall in four years.
“A few snowflakes seen this morning near the NSW border at Eukey, just south of #Stanthorpe,” the Bureau of Meteorology in Queensland wrote in a tweet.
Photos shared on social media showed a layer of ice and snow blanketing the grounds of parts of the island as the Bureau of Meteorology issued weather warnings throughout its eastern coast.
The snow was seen in various parts of Queensland and New South Wales, according to forecasters.
“Snow is rare in QLD but does happen from time to time, mostly near the border. The last significant snowfall was back in 2015,” Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology in Queensland wrote on Twitter.

New South Wales’ fire service added that conditions were “definitely wild and woolly along the east coast.”
It is definitely wild and woolly along the east coast today. A number of NSW roads are affected by snow and ice. Winds are forecast to strengthen across the day. Meteorologist Lachlan Stone told the BBC that given Queensland’s sub-tropical to tropical climate, snow was unusual.
“But in the south of the state, particularly near the New South Wales border, it’s quite mountainous and in the elevated areas it can get quite cold,” he told the British broadcaster.
According to the Guardian, wild weather was disrupting flights and trains throughout the eastern coast of Australia.
Australians began sharing some stunning photos of the weather, too.
